Research / Refrences

These images are off Design Crowd a web site were people can go to put up briefs of design they need or they can search designers and their portfolios and ask for commission prices. Also designer can go on to look at briefs and put concepts forwards.

This is one of the briefs and the concepts put forth, the first one was the chosen one in the end and they other are all runners up. Its nice to see four different design for the same brief, they all have a similar feel but are quite visual different.

Illustration Contest Brief

The business is a charter business that caters to families and specialises in crabbing - Fun Time Crabbing. I am looking for a crab character that still looks "friendly". Most of the clientele are vacationing families with young children, new to experiences on the water and crabbing. We use small skiff boats and the crabbing is done with crab traps. Being on the water can be intimidating to people and crabs are both ugly and ill-tempered, so the hope is to have them focus on an idealised character. I am open to colours.
Target Market
Vacationing families with children looking for alternatives to sitting at the beach all day
Look And Feel
Playful, Colourful, Bold, Traditional, Personable, Feminine, Economical

Chosen Design.

Illustration Contest Brief

This is a startup pressure washing business. We need both a logo and an illustration to go with it.
We want a super-hero mascot that is both appealing to children (since most of our clients are moms) and still professional enough to work with our commercial clients.
A super-hero with a "w" in the chest, similar to superman is what we're initially thinking. It would be great if we could play down the superhero portion on his pants, so that it more closely resembles a muscle-bound worker, with superhero powers (some of our workers actually wear muck boots, which might be a funny detail for a superhero). That ties our operators together with the image, by using similar designs on their clothing.
This mascot will be on corporate vans, business cards, flyers, etc.
We would like to use bright, friendly colors... and we're not afraid to do something extremely bold. Most of our workers already use bright green shirts.
We will also take the logo on this mascot's chest and make it our corporate logo.
If you nail the mascot, we'd be interested in letting you also make a full corporate package as well. Logos, business cards, brochures, and numerous small print jobs within the first month!
Looking for a partner that can work with us in the future, since we have a lot of additional needs.
Target Market
50% of our customers are moms who call in and see our truck. The other 50% are commercial institutions like hospitals, restaurants, and retail stores.
Look And Feel
Bold, Modern, Playful, Personable, Colorful, Economical, Feminine

Chosen design.

Colour Palett

Using the adobe colour wheel I'm trying to come up with the colour palette for my character. Although I want to keep it fun and bright I thinking using colours that people associate with nature is important because as New Zealanders we play on that with lots of brands and attractions and also now that Tip Top only uses natural flavours and no added colours the colours them self in the food are less intense.

Browns and creams for waffle cone.
Yellow for summer and also links to the Trumpet logo.
Blue for water and beach also links to the Trumpet logo.
Green for the natural flavours and linking to New Zealand green image.
Reds to symbolise hot weather.

Research / Refrences

Looking into other brands and their character development.

Talkzilla

iOS / Android calling app. With the Talkzilla app, users will be able to 'raise' their own Talkzilla by giving him cookies as calling rewards. The bigger the monster, the bigger the discount!

Silhouettes

These are my initial concepts of silhouette. I would like to stay away from the human figure and create a cartoon character of some sort. Here I was just thinking about shapes and lines then adding a bit more detail.

Research

Tip Top are now working on natural flavours and colours taking out the artificial ones this is a ad of them promoting the idea.

I love the simply colours and images. The soft line work is what I have been thinking about for my design. Really simple with solid colours, the imagery doesn't have a lot of shading its quiet silhouette with the movement creating this dripping ice cream effect.

Reseach

Tip Top Ads.

The Trumpet range came out in the 60s. The first ever ad for Tip Top came out in the 80's starring Rachal Hunter when she was 15 years old, helping them grow bigger. These are the ads for trumpet, all based around summer and fun. Undies/togs was a favourite of mine and definitely the most used ad. They are all short and sweet with light hearted humor. Because of the fun nature they are rememberable and this is want I need to take into consideration when designing.

Slogan - Trumpet, simplifying summer.

All based around a beach setting.

Joking around

Tip Top

In 1936 Len and Albert, opened an ice cream parlour in Manners St, Wellington. Unknowing to them this was to become a national icon loved by generations of New Zealanders. They started created their own ice creams launching their first novelty ice cream bar in 1950's with Eskimo Pie. Then Topsy their first ice cream on a stick.

In 1962, these Kiwi upstarts built the Southern Hemisphere’s largest and most advanced centre for ice cream excellence – the ice cream factory most commonly known to Aucklanders as Tip Top corner. Tip Top’s innovation has been the key to its success, Tip Top has produced iconic products that stand the test of time like Jelly Tip, Choc Bar, Trumpet and Memphis Meltdown – the first triple dipped ice cream on the planet!

Tip Top today… "In a country with the world’s best milk and cream, the purest water, the sweetest fruit and richest flavours, it’s no surprise Tip Top is the world’s best ice cream – and it’s made right here in NZ. At Tip Top we mix our passion for ice cream with Kiwi ingenuity and real ingredients to create the most loved ice cream for every Kiwi, for every generation.  We’re proud to be the home of ‘Kiwi as’ names like Trumpet, Fruju, Jelly Tip, Choc Bar, Memphis Meltdown and Popsicle – not to mention that quintessential ice cream flavour, Hokey Pokey."

Tip top now creates 50 million litres of ice cream a year and is now a subsidiary of Fonterra since 2001. Jelly Tip, Hokey Pokey and Vanilla are the most flavours of bowl ice cream. By sale the five most popular novelties are Choc Bar, Lemonade Popsicle, Memphis Meltdown Big Nuts, Jelly Tip and Pineapple FruJu.

Brief

Project Brief:

You will need to select and research an existing brand from one of the four
categories listed below. Identify the products ‘brand values’ and develop a
‘brand essence’. Develop, design and illustrate a product character or mascot
that encapsulates those values and that essence.
Your character should work across multiple platforms (large/small print,
animation, toys, clothing etc.) You are also required to incorporate a secondary
component or supporting imagery (props, environment, vehicle… etc.) in order
to further characterise your mascot.
The final designs are created using Adobe Illustrator in combination with
Photoshop, or you may also use 3D modelling applications - zbrush or
physical sculpting,

1. Food product
2. Beverage
3. Sports team (mascot)
4. Cleaning product

______________________________________________________________

I have choose to use photoshop as I know my way around it more than the others but still have so much to learn also I wouldn't mind trying out Illustrator as I really like the style although I have no experience with it.

Wacom exerises

This is the first time I have ever used a Wacom tablet so before classes started back up I had a play around with it and got to know it these are some of the things I did to get to know the Wacom and its mechanisms.

In order from earliest to latest.

The first ones are really basic trying to get a feel for the hand coordination, then the last two are colouring in pictures I got off the internet and coloured in using photoshop.
